childhood poverty is more than material needs or a specific income; it is the lack of basic tools and resources for children to thrive.

racial achievement gap

The racial achievement gap is a phenomenon where white students consistently perform at a higher level on tests and attain higher scores/grades in comparison to their non-white peers.

Educators and policy makers have differing opinions on the cause and solutions to this multifaceted and consistently steady issue. This issue is exacerbated even further when children are of lower socioeconomic levels.

the damage of stereotypes

A study by the American Psychological Association found that negative stereotyping can directly affect overall achievement of students, creating a “stereotype threat” that creates insecurities, doubts, and lack of self-confidence, thus contributing to the achievement gap.

Another research group at Yale University middle school students a 15-minute writing assignment where half the students were told to write about their personal values, designed to validate their identity and self-worth, and half were to write about a neutral topic. After the study, black students who wrote the validating essay scored on average .24 points higher than black students who wrote about something neutral.

Journey Map

journey map

“Once students feel affirmed, a whole series of forces in the environment exist to help propel them forward: teachers noticing their potential more, giving them more challenging work, directing them to advanced courses. The effects can be powerful, but the intervention itself plays a subtle role as an initiator of this larger process.”
